Advice

I've been reading a ton of pregnancy and parenting books about how to raise healthy, emotionally well-adjusted children.  Dr. Oz claims that by eating certain foods, when pregnant, you will bring out good and bad traits in your children. I'm pretty sure my brother is a pain in butt from time to time because my mother drank diet coke while pregnant with him.  When she was pregnant with me she loved ice cream which caused my need to correct other's grammar and talk incessantly.  This should tell you how much stock I'm putting in all this research.  I don't believe any of it. If my kid is screwed up I'm not blaming it on the chicken fingers I ate. Now the french fries, maybe.

What is the dumbest parenting/pregnancy advice you have heard?  I would love a good laugh, please share.

I'm going to go eat some chocolate covered pretzels.

  1. This post is why I love you. There is so, so much dumb advice that is often freely shared. I have to think about it and will be back. Bad comment, I know.

  2. I dont know that I would necessarily call it bad advice, but just annoying...the lactation consultants at the hospital were sooo close minded and believed any formula was the devil. They actually said to my husband "Before that at three weeks, she is going to say the F word....FORMULA! Do not let her use any!" Breastfeeding is hard enough without crazies judging. That is the only thing that stands out.

  3. oh my gosh, you would die if you met this crazy girl that works with me. She is obsessed with babies/having children and believes every stupid things she hears/reads. She seriously believes you can control the sex of your baby by what you eat. She also pretty much shames you if you send your kids to daycare or dont breastfeed until they are teenagers like she does (you think im kidding - she breastfeeds until she is ready to get preggo again, which is about every 2 years.). She told me you cant drink tap water, especially if you live in a cove, bc it causes cancer. apparently cove water makes it more likely to cause cancer? i just ignore her and walk off. Cant stand her! people are soooo crazy! also, has the inapproprate belly touching started? if not, get excited about it! total strangers think if you are pregnant that it is completely acceptable to rub and touch your stomach. gross. i had a patient try to kiss my stomach! granted, she was crazy, but still.

  4. Worst advice- the people who assume that because it worked for their kid it will work for mine. Argh.

From Doer to Leader, 5 Tips to Make the Transition

You did it! You got the promotion and now manage a team. It doesn't matter if it's a team of 1 or 100 your skill set must shift from doer to leader. While many a doer get promoted, few take on the actual characteristics of a leader. Instead they stay in doer mode causing frustration, resentment and turnover in their organization. This is what I refer to as "death by doer." Killing all hope, creativity and productivity of a team. Don't become the grim reaper of your team. Instead adopt these simple behaviors to ignite passion in your group and share your doer gifts. Stop doing and starting teaching Why were you such a successful doer? Because you thought differently than your peers. It's time to share that thinking with your team. As a leader it's your job to teach your team how to think, not what to think. Many a leader get caught up in micromanaging tasks. They believe there is only one way to accomplish a task and it's theirs. This is the u...

That's a Real Baby!

Darren and I got to see our little baby this week! He/she is measuring 13 weeks and 1 day and everything looked healthy. This picture cracks me up because the baby looks like it's pouting because we woke it up.  We did though, the tech was pushing on my belly like I do when I'm trying to get into pair of jeans that are too small!  Baby Hawk wouldn't move! Enter the Kashi cereal bar.  I hadn't eaten in nearly 4 hours (the appointment was VERY long) so I ate my Kashi bar that I always keep in my purse for ultrasound emergencies. BOOM, baby Hawk was wiggling and sucking and even looked like he/she was sucking it's thumb! Yes, this is indeed my baby, I go nuts for food too! I do think the profile looks like Darren though. Darren makes this cute pouty face when he's being funny.  So, the mystery is solved, this is Darren's baby. Whew, we were wondering. I'm totally kidding people! This picture is sort of creepy to me but I must share my 3-D picture. I...

LeaderSHIFT Academy

Each week I bring you a tip in the hopes that you not only enjoy the writing but you also implement positive change in your life. After months of planning I'm ready to take this a step further. Making the SHIFT It all started when I received my undergraduate degree and entered adulthood. I began to see something akin to an illness all around me. No matter how many promotions I received or how high I climbed the corporate ladder it was still there, in every level of management.  Even after receiving my MBA surrounded by some of the smartest people I've ever met, there it was, the plague.  What is this disease I refer to? The lack of sustainably* successful leadership.  I threw myself into biographies, podcasts and personal development books with the sole purpose of understanding what made a sustainably successful leader tick. Why were there so few? In July of this year everything fell into place. During a corporate event, Brendon Bruchard spoke ab...
