Who doesn't love a good birth story? I personally love them and now I can share mine. :-) Stella was due Sunday March 25th but sadly that day came and went. My midwives have been telling me that I would not make it to my due date because Stella was so low and ready to come out. WRONG! So, Monday March 26th I called the doctor's office and told them I still hadn't delivered. They scheduled an appointment for that morning and Darren went with me in the hopes they would induce me right then. WRONG! They hooked me up to a machine to measure contractions and the baby's heart rate. Apparently I was having pretty strong contractions (which I really didn't notice). The contractions were erratic so the midwife checked me and sent us home. She did however schedule an induction for the next morning if I didn't go into labor overnight which she swore I would because of the contractions. WRONG! I did start to get heavier contractions but they were still erratic and nothing to write home about. So, we ended up making it to the induction. I was induced at 7:30AM on Tuesday March 27th with a very small dose of pitocin. Around 8:30 I started to feel real contractions and the midwife was pleased with how much I had effaced and dilated so she broke my water. When she did this she said "uh oh, it looks like your baby has already had a bowel movement. I had read about this and knew this could be very dangerous so I was a little freaked. The midwife said it was very common and that she would call a special team in to clean Stella up once she was born. She also said she may not cry right away because they didn't want the miconium in her lungs. Just another sign that Stella was past due. The midwife then said it looked like I would have a baby by 7PM that night. Darren and I were so excited. Then the REAL contractions started....um, not fun. I was dilated enough to get an epidural at any time thank goodness so when this pain hit the epidural was administered in 20 minutes! I feel very lucky for the fast response by the anaesthesiologist. It still took a good hour to kick in...no one told me that part. Ha! They ended up upping my pain meds because instead of my contractions lasting 60 seconds they were lasting 180 seconds. But, the good news was, Stella was moving fast. By 12:30 the midwife came in to check me and asked if I would like to have a baby in about an hour! YAY! I started pushing around 2PM and out popped Stella at 2:43PM! She was rushed to the corner of the room for the shit team to work on her (I'm sure they have a proper name but they were called in to get poop off my baby so this is what I will call them). She then started crying. Oh, that cry, music to my ears.
After all that she got an Apgar score of 9! Darren then got to hold her. The sweetest moment I've ever witnessed.
More to come. I need to run and feed her now. :-)

ReplyDeleteSo happy to hear that your sweet baby girl is here and well. I keep track of you through Melissa, but I was waiting for your post. Congratulations!! Ms.B
ReplyDeleteSo excited for you! And you are hilarious! Glad it went so well! And um, my epidural kicked in immediately. I must have been lucky. Although both times it kicked in that it dropped my blood pressure so fast I almost got sick and was clammy and miserable, but it was only temporary. Cant wait to read more about her!
