Thumbs down, thumbs down, thumbs down, thumbs up

Stella and Mitch,
I've been reading a lot lately, doing some souls searching. I think everyone does this from time to time.

I recently listened to this book called "The gifts of imperfect parenting" and one story stuck with me. This woman was a swim instructor and frequently held flip turn camps. You are both really strong swimmers even as I write this so I have a feeling you'll know what that is. I was a strong swimmer too and never mastered the flip turn because it's tricky. This particular teacher would make her students do flip turns over and over again. With each try she would give them a thumbs up or thumbs down. In order to stop you had to get 5 thumbs ups. Some of the parents got together and told the teacher she needed to stop giving thumbs down signs to the children. A thumbs down is way too harsh! I'm writing this to you to tell you that life is harsh, thumbs downs are necessary. They hurt, but when you get a  lot of thumbs down it makes a thumbs up moment so much sweeter.

I would have to say my life has been a million thumbs downs. I'm not a natural at anything. I had to be tutored in math, i was the slowest in gym class (I used to skip laps on mile run day so I wouldn't be the last to finish).  I was the slowest typer in typing class (I actually had to come in early before school to finish the work that everyone else could do during class time). I never made the greatest grades, just average, and I worked hard to get those grades. This sounds really sad right? Funny enough I'm one of the happiest people I know and I firmly believe it's because of all of these early thumbs downs.

Let me catch you up to present day. I do math for a living, it's a true passion and when I'm in the middle of a math problem I lose all track of space and time. It's my Nervana. In fact I manage a team of people that do math. I don't know that I always inspire but I'm really good at confusing people. 😃

I workout 6 days a week. It's my solace. It makes me a happier, more centered soul while also making me feel amazing. Movement is almost spiritual to me at this point in my life. Daily I'm in awe of what I can do.

I'm typing this and clearly have mastered the skill. I can type faster than I can write. I basically type everything. It even helps me organize my thoughts better.

I'm probably one of the most successful people I graduated with from high school and college. This is arguable of course but I'm living my passion every single day and for some reason people pay me to do that! In my book that's success.

So why am I telling you all of this? In the hopes that you get a lot of thumbs downs too. Because if you're like me (and genetically you are) you'll keep plugging away until you get the sweetest thumbs up moments that make it all worthwhile. I will want to make everything thumbs up for you but honestly I would take away so much from your life if I did. So, when I don't go to your teachers for you and I don't punch the kid that bullied you please know this is my way of loving you. We can talk through these moments and I'm always here as a guide and sounding board, but you have to earn your thumbs downs to earn your thumbs ups.

I love you my sweet babies.

  1. I absolutely LOVE this, Emily. Thumbs down for the win! Everyone (child or adult) needs to learn to work through adversity, be able to handle truth, and grow through hard work and determination. This is an important lesson for all people, and I love that you are teaching it to your children at a young age. They will be better people because of the great person that you are. :)

That's a Real Baby!

Darren and I got to see our little baby this week! He/she is measuring 13 weeks and 1 day and everything looked healthy. This picture cracks me up because the baby looks like it's pouting because we woke it up.  We did though, the tech was pushing on my belly like I do when I'm trying to get into pair of jeans that are too small!  Baby Hawk wouldn't move! Enter the Kashi cereal bar.  I hadn't eaten in nearly 4 hours (the appointment was VERY long) so I ate my Kashi bar that I always keep in my purse for ultrasound emergencies. BOOM, baby Hawk was wiggling and sucking and even looked like he/she was sucking it's thumb! Yes, this is indeed my baby, I go nuts for food too! I do think the profile looks like Darren though. Darren makes this cute pouty face when he's being funny.  So, the mystery is solved, this is Darren's baby. Whew, we were wondering. I'm totally kidding people! This picture is sort of creepy to me but I must share my 3-D picture. I...

To Stella

I thought it would be fun to write a letter to you before I met you. We could read it together later and laugh about how clueless I was about you! Dear Stella, It's Christmas 2011 and I honestly haven't thought at all about the holiday this year.  All I can think about is March, when I get to meet you for the first time.  Your Dad and I went to the hospital this week to check out where you would be born! I thought for sure going to the hospital would make me anxious but instead it made me incredibly excited. What a gift it is to bring someone into the world and because of you I get to experience that.  You have no idea how much you were prayed for, wanted, hoped for, for so many years. I always knew I wanted to be a mother, even back in high school when I worked in a toy store and joked about getting my tubes tied. :-) But, when I found out about YOU I couldn't have been happier.  I remember standing in the bathroom completely convinced that I had willed ...

2012 Highlights

So I'm obviously abandoning my attempt to try to capture every Saturday in Stella's life. I now realize that's impossible. Plus, not everything in the world happens on a Saturday. It's the fun/sad/crazy moments that are the ones you want to remember right? (by sad I mean "my baby's growing up" sniff sniff)  And those usually happen on a random Tuesday or something. So I'm going to attempt in this last post of the year (and some of you may be saying "your only post this year", no I had like 7 okay...ha ha) to remember the BEST moments of my life in 2012. You may want to go pee, eat something and bring a drink back, this sucker's going to be long. Our House January 1st we moved into our house. I love our house. It is seriously a fairytale house and neighborhood where I want my babies to grow up. I have a nightmare once a month that involves us moving, I usually wake up very sad. Odd, yes. Apparently you know you're old when you...
